Moving out on your own for the first time is always a daunting task. Maybe you’re heading off to University, or maybe you’re moving away to a new job, or perhaps you’re finally moving forward with your partner. Whatever the reason, the best way to make the transition an easy one, is to ensure that you are well-prepared with all of the important stuff that you’ll need to get you going:
Bed and Bedding
Having a bed might sound fairly obvious, but it’s probably the most important item that any house needs. Even if it’s the only piece of furniture that you have for a while, at least you can live in the comfort that you will always be able to get a good night’s sleep. Try to buy the best that you can afford. Using bedding that you’re familiar with will help make the transition to your new home easier. However, buying new ones can make you feel like you’re making a new start.
Sofa
There is nothing better than coming home from a long day at work or college, throwing your shoes off and sitting down on a nice comfy sofa. Try to purchase the best that you can afford, and take into consideration what you intend to use it for. For example, if you’re expecting your family and friends to come stay, you might consider buying a Sofa Bed.

Indoor Clothes Airer
If you are moving into a property without any outside space, and can’t afford to purchase a Tumble Drier, then you will definitely need an indoor clothes airer. Airer’s are handy for allowing washed garments to drip dry or to air before you put them away. Even if you do have a garden to dry your clothes in the summer, you will find an airer useful during the colder winter months when drying outside probably isn’t an option.
Kitchen Utensils
Provided your new home comes with a cooker, it helps if you have utensils to cook with. Many supermarkets and retailers sell sets including a variety of what you’ll need, at a decent price. Essentially you’ll need sauce pans of varying size, a frying pan, cutlery, wooden spoons and spatulas, mixing bowls, weighing scales, a measuring jug, bowls and plates for meals and cereals, a toaster and you’ll quite likely need a microwave too.
Washing Up Stuff
Things like a washing up bowl, dish cloth, kitchen towels and washing up liquid are fairly important, but it’s easy to forget that you’ll probably need washing products for your clothes too. If you’re not intending to buy a washing machine straight away, try to find out if the products that you’re buying are suitable for hand washing.
Food
When you first move in, it’s a good idea to do a huge shop for the staple ingredients that you’ll probably use a lot as a part of most meals. It’s easier to buy these en masse initially, and replace them only when they run out, because this will ultimately work out a great deal cheaper. This includes items like tea, coffee, sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes, herbs and spices (oregano, chili), sauces (Soy, Worcester, Tomato), salt, flour (plain and self-raising), oils (Olive, Sunflower).
Television
Even when times are tough, it should be easy to pick up a cheap television, even if it is second hand and small, which is surely better than nothing. Of course, if you do purchase a TV, don’t forget that it is a legal requirement to hold a Television License. Also, don’t forget that if your area has gone “digital” then you’ll also need to pick up a Freeview Box to view programmes, if you don’t want to fork out for Satellite or Cable.
